Housebreaking Your Chi Pom Puppy

Every dog owner knows that training puppies can be a bit of a handful at the best of times! But with the right training and consistency, your Chi Pom puppy can become a quick learner.

First things first, you want to start with basic housetraining, and teaching your Chi Pom from an early age is vital. Throughout the first year of a Chi Poms life, their body and brain are constantly developing at a rapid pace, which will allow them to naturally adapt to certain routines.

Your new Chi Pom puppy has to learn and respect the rules of the house, so the first few months training is crucial.

When you bring your new Chi Pom back home, make sure you have all the essentials a small puppy is going to need. Here is a great list of items perfect for a new Chi Pom pup;
Puppy Training Pads

Puppy Crate

Puppy Food

Water bowls

Poo bags!

Squeaky Toys. (Chi Poms love them!)
Treats (For Training)

Towels

Start by placing puppy pads down around your puppy crate and a few scattered round for those wanderers! These pads are a great way to start training your Chi Pom where to do their business!

 Each and every time your Chi Pom puppy has an accident immediately respond by telling them “No!” or “Bad boy/girl”, (it sometimes helps to put their nose by the accident) and put them straight onto the puppy pad, (again putting their nose on the pad helps) saying phrases such as “On the mat” and “You wee on this pad” usually works, but chances are they are still trickling which eventually helps them understand.

The reason being once they have urinated on the puppy pad and they get that distinctive smell they will “find it acceptable” to do their business on the puppy pads. Always make sure you praise your Chi Pom puppy whenever they foul on their pads. Gaining confidence they will start to understand quickly what is wrong and what is right.

Consistency is the key in this type of training, if you stay consistent so will your Chi Pom! If you choose to accept accidents and let your Chi Pom “off the hook” you may be training them a lot longer than you think!
